Crinoline

Crinoline was originally a rigid structure with a chain of horse-hair and a warp of cotton or linen thread. The substance first appeared around s dress in the desired shape. In form and function is very similar to the previous farthingale.

foam "> http://www.himfr.com/buy-foam_visors/"> foam visorsThe name 'Crinoline' was invented by one of the substance's manufacturers, who combined the Latin word crinis (see the hair) and Linum (see linen). An alternative origin of the word is sometimes given: a combination of the French word Crin (specifically meaning horse-hair) and lin (again, meaning flax).

The Crinoline was not the first accessory designed to support the wearer's skirts in the right shape, it farthingale in its various forms was worn from the late of the fifteenth century through the early seventeenth century, and panniers in the eighteenth century. But these very formal and develop styles were only worn at the Royal Courts and at the highest levels of society.

After the French Revolution, French fashion turned against the major styles favored by royalty, royal court and aristocracy. As Parisian fashion was very influential, they adopted most Western European countries in the same style.

Under the prevailing neoclassical influence, s womenâ € ™ Fashion had adopted a simple style based on the simple draped garments of ancient Greece and the toga of old Rome. Skirts were straight and slender, and worn with very few â € "if any â €" petticoats.

However, the silhouette did not remain that way for long, and skirt hems began to expand to provide a taper. In the 1810s, Gore began to be used in skirts again, and skirts grew wider in the 1820s. The breadth of these dresses was sometimes supported by a small bustle. These were not always enough, and so extra petticoats were worn to help.

The first 'crinolines' were petticoats starched for extra stiffness, or made by the new Crinoline fabric, and they often had ruffles to support the skirts to the desired width. However, dress fabrics were heavy but not hard enough to support their own weight, which had a tendency to hide under the skirts out of shape. Extra rigidity was added to petticoats through rings of cord or braid running around the hem. In the 1830s, women started to wear petticoats with hoops of whalebone or cane around the hem.

The first hoop skirt in the U.S. from 1846, patent number 4584 by David Hough, Jr. in 1858, IRJ's U.S. patent number 20681 was the first latticework of strings and hoops.

In 1858, was the American Thomson greatly facilitated the development of cage Crinoline by developing a hollow fastener connecting steel Crinoline steel brackets with vertical bands down from a band around wearerâ € ™ s waist. The invention was patented in the U.S. (patent US21581), France (patent FR41193) and Britain (patent GB1204/1859). Relieved this fashionable silhouette's evolution from a conical to a dome. It was not an entirely original idea; Thompson was probably inspired by the open cage or frame style farthingales and panniers.

Cage Crinoline was adopted with enthusiasm: the numerous petticoats, even the stiffened or hooped them, were heavy, bulky and generally uncomfortable. It was Light â € "it requires only one or two petticoats worn over the top to prevent the steel bands appearing as ridges in the skirt â €" and liberated wearer's legs from tangling petticoats.

In contrast to the farthingale and panniers, the Crinoline was worn by women of all social classes. The larger distribution of magazines and newspapers spread the news about the new fashion, also fueling desire it, and mass production made it affordable.

It Crinoline was the subject of much ridicule and satire, particularly in Punch magazine. Dress reformers did not like it either â € "The grip cage aspect of Crinoline and claimed that it effectively imprisoned women. Given that Crinoline finally had a maximum diameter of up to 180 cm (six feet), it is easy to imagine the difficulties to get through the doors into and out of the cars, and the general problems of moving such a large structure. But while the Crinoline to have a certain degree of stiffness, also had a degree of flexibility. A special type of steel known as spring steel or watch spring steel, enabled the hoops to be temporarily pressed out of shape.

The second problem was the potential irregularities in Crinoline. Its lightness was a curse and a blessing when a gust of wind or a knock could set it swinging and expose wearer's legs. Just worse if she tripped or was overthrown, would keep Crinoline skirts up.

The third problem was the pressure, but tight rigid corset spreading pressure.

Sit down can be a problem if the user has failed to spread her skirts properly as the entire hoop contraption would fly up in her face. This embarrassing but humorous trend is often depicted in comedies of the era.

The biggest problem with Crinoline, however, was that in some situations it was dangerous â € "at because of its size, the wearer was often not aware of how the edges were. It was just inconvenient and annoying when a Maida € ™ s Crinoline knocked a vase from a table or topple a cup, but for factory girls, there was a risk of crinolines getting caught in machinery and drag them to be mutilated or crushed to death [Source missing]. Crinolines also burnt easily, partly because the air circulates freely beneath them, and partly because the fashionable dress drugs, silk and cotton, were highly flammable.

The Crinoline had grown to its largest dimensions of the 1860th But as the fashionable silhouette never remains the same for too long, the big skirts began to fall off. About 1864, dies of Crinoline began to change. Rather than being dome-shaped, front and sides began to contract, leaving volume only at the back. The kind of Crinoline, who supported this style was also known as a crinolette. The cage structure was still attached to the waist and extended down to earth, but only extended down the back of wearerâ € ™ s legs. The crinolette itself was quickly superseded by the bustle, which was sufficient to support the drapery and took on the back of the skirt.

Crinolines is still worn today. They are usually part of a formal devices, such as an evening gown or a wedding dress. The volume of the skirt is not as great as in the Victorian era, so modern crinolines are most often constructed of several layers of stiff net, with flounces to extend the skirt. If there is a hanger in Crinoline, it will likely be made of plastic or nylon, which is low cost, lightweight and flexible.

With the recent trend for lavish weddings and grandiose bridal attire has Crinoline started making a comeback. For her first solo collection, as fashion designer Vivienne Westwood to Crinoline for inspiration. The collection, called Mini Crini, featured shorter Crinoline skirts with more flexible plastic hoops.
