Ripe, red coffee and blood on Deck

The not-so-nice smell of rotting fruit from the nearby Coopeatenas coffee processing plant Benificio Diamante, let me know that the harvest had begun. Not in a big way yet again, projecting small quantities selectively picked as shrubs with a little too much sun for this height matures. But it has to be plucked; green to yellow to orangish to red and then brown and down to earth and lost. Don Ramon and young David had picked the little ripening fruit Finca Zacatal only two cajuelas – maybe forty pounds. But like a Beaujolais Nouveau, bears the first fruits of the season a certain tension.

I was just put the half full bag in the back of my Montero when a big Ford pickup pulled into casi el Cielo. Captain Jose by Angry Marlin Sportfishing, www.angrymarlin.com stuck his head out of window and shouted: "Come, let's go: It's time to put the Montauk into the water." He had added a Costa Rica Charter both his adventures armada, a 17 foot center console, walk around Boston Whaler. So, coffee moved from my car to his, and then to Benefícios San Isidro, where, after Captain Jose and I shared lots of fishing stories with Rolando Rojas, it started fermentation, purification, drying, husk removal, pre-frying, roasting and packaging that sets in on our shelves.

Puntarenas and Costa Rica Yacht Club is just over an hour from Atenas and soon we were putt down the quay over to dry storage when captain Jose's fishing boats are kept clean and dry on trailers. Radio, rods and reels and other gear came from a second boat as full black cover was pulled from the new baby. White and cream and chrome that glistened in front of the big four-stroke outboard. Dock crew backed it down the boat ramp and we were away. Off very slowly at first, when the tide was out, and there are places where there are less than two feet of water, and even the Montauk need a foot and a half.

Captain Jose taught me the instruments and controls and channels and obstructions we tall leaning out to deeper water, but soon we were on the plane and zipping to the fishing grounds. Working birds detected fish feeding on the surface, and we fell, stopped and cast metal fixtures in descending boil. As fast as the fish showed the left. I was so excited to be back on the water, I can not tell you how long the drive to Negrita train, but it was not long and a couple of minutes after getting there we changed to white, red head, five-inch Rapala and was trolling around the island just off the rocks. We were in the Pacific, the tiny chain of islands, including Tortugero and Negrita is where the blue ocean and brownish green bay Nicoya meet, where Los Sueno Fisheries and Tambor Fishing is famous for.

Roosterfish, Pargo, grouper, dorado, sierra mackerel, jack and jurel or even occasionally wahoo or sailfish were possibilities, these data were the result of a detailed statics from Costa Rica fishing report. I had taken the helm after clearing port on the way out, but was tired of the constant motion of the boat and the toll it takes on your legs as you stand bent kneed and bowlegged struggling for balance, so Captain Jose "drove" back. He loves this little Costa Rica charter boat and pushed it to the limits as we flew over the little chip and in the winter wood in the water.

By mid- Bay, Birds! We stopped as the few birds were previously grown to hundreds and the surface was broken into bands thirty feet by thirty feet by some unknown predator cut at baitfish driven to the surface. Again metal was thrown to them and this time we were both hooked up to the hard fighting Jack known locally as Jurel. Ten / twelve pounds each they were a good match and there were thousands of them within casting distance. We cast hooked up, fought and landed or released as many as we had in the arm and leg strength. The school would turn away break up and then re-group as we fought them hooked. A short term, where they showed up again, and we were hooked up again. It was the largest school of feeding wild fish I ever have seen and what fun. Four went in the ice chest and the rest swim to grow and wait for our return.

Over spicy lemon shrimp soup and beer at Restaurante Leda in Mata Captain Jose Limon and I exchanged views photos on our digital cameras and told stories about our great fishing Costa Rica Experince of past and future. (Captain Jose and his Montauk attended the following September to take two first place prizes to win a great Tarpon fishing tournament at the Rio San Juan! But that's another story about the great Costa Rica Sportfishing!)

From coffee harvest to cafe con leche at sunset on the beach, with the song rolls and pounding waves in between just another average day in Costa Rica.
