It is safe to say that for many of us when we think of centuries of art that has served to establish Paris as the cultural capital of Europe, what come to think about anything, even the high towers of Notre Dame and Place de la Concorde's gold capped obelisk, is the work of the French impressionists. Manifests a sense of urban bustle, there are unexpectedly interrupted by moments of aesthetic sublimation, it is no wonder that these painters of light has come to define a collective and indelible visual representation of the City of Light, true animation.

The term Impressionism began as a less critical leveled at artists such as William Turner and John Constable, whose atmospheric compositions were often dismissed by scholars as unrefined daubing. In 1872, however, tried Claude Monet (1840-1926) reclamation the insult of titles his groundbreaking portrayal of the English Channel at Sunrise Impression, Soleil Levant. While the appointment continues, it is interesting to note that the artists we gather as the Impressionists did not emerge in the later decades of the nineteenth century as a united movement with a singular manifesto. Rather, they were adjusted to influence of Edouard Manet (1832-1883), whose harsh rejection of romantic nostalgia trends were the driving force behind modern painting. Through highly personalized methods Impressionists sought to convey a reflection of the modern real, achieved by bringing their immediate surroundings, highlighting the visual resonance of intellectual inference.

Often credited as the fathers of what has been characteristic impressionist technique, Camille Pissarro (1831-1903) and Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) began experimenting with plein-air painting, renounce endless study audit of on-the-spot interpretation of the transient effect of sunlight on the landscape. While Sisley paintings often capture light with a masterly calculated clarity, Pissarro is more fluid depictions of Parisian gardens and broad boulevard Montmartre, rendered in flowing brush strokes and chaotic color has been almost synonymous with our understanding of Impressionism.

Whereas, Pissarro and Sisley favored broad vistas and vantage, the work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and Edgar Degas (1834-1917) reflect a more integrated perspective. Renoir's sun-dappled parks and outdoor cafes often seem to drown in happy crowds of Parisians, successfully transport the tension between observation and intrinsic involvement, which is unique to life in the city. Degas, as well, are often preoccupied with crowds, but use their energy to explore movement and gesture. Even his more stoic portraits, exemplified by the iconic L'Absinthe, a tendency to be filtered through the idiosyncratic perspectives (a technique no doubt influenced by the emergence of photograph) to force the viewer into the scene.

Since the effects of light, air and movement became more and more dominant in the work of these artists, the subject of the first time in the history of Western art, began to approach irrelevant, an idea that would become the dominant agenda of modernist practice in the coming years. Of all the Impressionists, it was Claude Monet (1840-1926), who were most willing to explore the subjugation of the object on grounds of visual perception. In 1877 he began a series of paintings illustrating the Gare Saint-Lazare, one of Paris's busiest railway stations. What is in these works from his earlier paintings, and perhaps those canvases produced in his later years in Giverny Monet is increased attention to the light that breaks through both the station's glass ceiling and billowing steam from the locomotives, and thereby transform the symbol of the industrialized age, the engine in pure color.

Impressionism while maintaining support in the Americas in the first decade of the twentieth century, in France, it began to fade developing new ideas as much calculated color theory of George Seurat (1859-1891), and new perspectives, as shown by the eerie nocturnal world of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Still, one of the world's most impressive collections of Impressionist paintings remain in Paris at Musée d'Orsay, housed in a stunning renovated Beaux Arts train terminal along Seine and a visit to the museum is important that everyone stay in the city.
