Cruising: Formal Nights or are they?

I have a pet-peeve. Ok, I have many pet Peeves, but especially one that comes to mind when we discuss cruises are people who think dressing not apply to them. Visit one of the cruise message boards, and you will often find heated debates over this issue. At Most cruise ships (with exceptions such as NCL – Norwegian Cruise Lines), you are "asked" to be in formal attire for dinner (usually two nights out of seven, a week long cruise.)

I have seen people who dress nicely and get it right and I'm angry when I see someone in something that does not even come close to the formula. Since when has a T-shirt that says "I'm with Stupid" described as formal in anyone's mind? To these people I say, if you do not want to dress, why are you on a cruise ship that has not dress? And why do you think applies to everyone but you?

Yes, it does bother me. If I and my fellow passengers can find the time and make an effort to groom and make ourselves presentable, so why on earth do you think you can do what you want? We are all feel that you or maybe it is your plan.

And no, just because a person is not dressed so much I can be that evening will not ruin my night or cruise, but it does anger me that people (and this applies to almost all aspects of life) does not believe that the rules apply to them. Got a red light because you do not want to stop? Or cut the woman with two children in fast food restaurant because she was not aware that she needed to move up? With few exceptions, probably most of you answered "no" to these questions. So why do you dress on the cruise ships do not apply to you?

Some believe that it is too expensive. Well, you found the money to book a cruise in the first instance it is asking all that much that you at least TRY to meet the formal night request? Nobody is asking you to drop $ 1,000 on a dress you may never wear again! Bargins can be found online at sites such as E-bay, and many (actually most times) it's pretty easy to find brand new, still have tags on the clothes that people just want to sell for whatever reason. This is a good place to get a $ 200 dress for $ 15 or $ 25 dollars. So NO it is too expensive argument does not fly with me at all.

This brings the question of why there are formal nights at all? Is not a cruise faith to be a relaxing, care-free experience? Well, no one interrupts a lot of information on formal nights (outside of the arguments pro and con) on the subject. The fact is that it goes back to the heyday when cruising was for the rich and famous and a serious means of transport. It was also a time when your social status was, and the way you dress reflect your social class. As cruising became a way to relax and less about being a form of transportation tradition of dressing for dinner was, and through course of history has dwindled to just two nights in a typical seven days cruise.

I enjoy dressing. It makes me feel better knowing I'm looking my best. And I find it very difficult to understand why people put such a fuss about putting on a dress or a cocktail dress or a suit or tuxedo. If you are looking after sports, t-shirt with your big kids about it, why can not you carry it in port or around the ship during the day? Why do you think the dress codes apply to all, but you?

Oh I know it's an argument I will never win. The fact that it has class and manners are rapidly losing their relevance in today's society, and yes, dressing is a part of class and manners. This is how you present yourself to the world. So if you want to wear your Minnie Mouse earrings and polyester slacks and top and call the regularity that is your choice, just do not do it on a cruise or sail on a line that provides a relaxed dress code.
