How to interpret dress codes on invitations

Deciding what clothes to a party or other formal gathering may be quite difficult at times. On some occasions less formal attire is not important. It all really depends on the invitation. If you were invited verbally of a person you know well, picking out what clothes are not all that difficult. If you have received some form of formal invitation clearly indicates a formal dress code, however, things can be confusing. The term "black tie" is easy enough to understand, but what about the rest of your body? How can I know what clothes when the invitation says "smart casual "?

White tie
When the invitation says white tie, you know, you come to a very formal event. This is the most Formal Evening Dress code. White tie, if worn often for very up-scale weddings, opera and other types of formal dinners such as the Nobel dinner held after the award ceremony. The main parts of male clothing is the dress coat, white bow tie and vest, and starched shirt. Women are expected to arrive at a suitable dress for the occasion, like a ball gown.

Black tie
Black tie is considered as semi-formal in comparison to his white tie counterpart, but most of us consider very formal black tie as well. Invitations for weddings often wear this dress code. For men the main part of a black tie dress code consists of a dinner jacket or tuxedo, because it is more commonly known in North America. Usually smoking is black, but you can also choose to go with a dark blue color. Depending on the current fashion, manners, and so on, is a woman expected to wear a conservative cocktail dress or a long evening gown.

Lounge suit
When the invitation calls for a lounge suit, it basically means you must wear classic suits. Interest dress code wise, a lounge suit is considered informal dress code, but some of us feel pretty formal and dressed up anyway. There are some general guidelines to consider themselves. You should preferably use a dark suit and not go crazy with the colors either on the jacket, shirt and tie. A white shirt is often the safest bet and a tie with few colors are preferred. If your suit comes with a vest that is a plus also adds it to the (in) formality.

Smart casual
Smart casual is a rather loosely defined dress code. They are supposed to look and relaxed, but still be smart enough to meet the standards of particular social group. Here you will have no choice, depending on the type of social event, you will participate. Usually, however, smart casual dress consists of trousers – sometimes jeans or chino – a long-sleeved shirt with an optional binder, and if appropriate, you can wear a jacket or sport coat. Women can choose to wear pants, long or short skirt or even jeans with a pretty blouse or turtleneck. Remember that formality is very subjective, and in some places above description of smart casual will be regarded as purely coincidental, with smart casual requires a jacket and tie at all times.
