Laced with good-natured hipster kitsch and endearingly goofy girl power, director Drew Barrymore's roller derby dramedy, "Whip It" is a gas. In its contact-sport debut feature, ham Barrymore it up as an injury-prone skater "Smashley Simpson," but pays equally to all actors in a lively femme-centric ensemble led by Ellen Page – who, like blossoming wallflower Bliss Cavendar (aka "Babe Ruthless") finally has a role to match her star-making turn in "Juno". Young women will roll in the aisles and generally BO prospects look zippy for Fox Searchlight's Oct. 2 publishing, especially as fall track appears crowded with weighty opponents.

Gromit adjusting her novel "Derby Girl" screenwriter Shauna Cross follow the basic rules for the next-of-age film that punk-spirited Texas teen Bliss (Page) yearn to distinguish themselves from old-school mom and dad (Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern) have her enrolled in cheesy, "Little Miss Sunshine"-style beauty contests. When bespectacled Bliss, a waitress in a small town BBQ joint, occurs after the rough and tumble world of women's roles derby, discovery releasing not only her, but the movie also finds his true calling in and around the track.

Hiding her age to try to hurl scouts, Bliss shows surprising speed, although her old Barbie skates and landing a coveted place on the team, despite an initial reluctance to push and shove competitors – sport's raison d'être, especially for hooting fans.

Although Barrymore is not very interested in mapping of spatial complex roller derby action, shooting her in the game – equal parts stupid and violent – lots visceral for these purposes. What distinguishes "Whip It" from the sports movie pack Director sharp focus on details of the team camaraderie, as Bliss learns to body-check opponents and is eventually accepted by her eldest kyle Scouts – tough-as-nails chicks with self-Army-green getups and names like "Maggie Mayhem" (Kristen Wiig) and "Bloody Holly" (Zoe Bell, "Death Proof").

As coach of her own team, Barrymore has assembled a game crew of All-Film Al-stars, including dp Robert Yeoman ("Rushmore"), editor Dylan Tichenor ("Magnolia") and the ubiquitous music supervisor Randall Poster, the soundtrack, ranging from the Ramones to the Breeders, matching the rapid rolling action hit for hit. Kevin Kavanaugh production design captures the working-class Texas wonderful, and Catherine Marie Thomas 'costumes – especially skaters' outfits, from helmets fishnets – is a hoot.

If "Whip It" seems to push his luck with a nearly two-hour time, it's a forgivable offense in connection with Barrymore's palpable desire to make the relationship resolve not only happy, but believably. Up to the climatic championship game (inconvenient place on the night to Mom's beloved Bluebonnet festival), the film's last third is a comprehensive series of long two-handers between Bliss and suggest different: her intimidating rival (a rad Juliette Lewis), her fave teammate / Confidential (Wiig), her overprotective mother, her cheerleader's father, her jealous best friend (Alia Shawkat) and her cute, but unreliable beau (Landon Pigg). Remarkably, none of these dialogue-heavy scenes takes the easy way out.

Of course credit for the film's considerable winning ways belong to the side whose performance – complete with her own skating – is one of grit, grace and speed. Acting far less precocious than she did in "Juno" and "Hard Candy", the young thesp takes a small and welcome turn toward realism here, while for fancifully carved warm tone that is the film's defining quality.

As if the emotional weight of a sling scouts food fight was not surprising enough, the end credits "cliched use of comical bloopers think even radical, like "Whip It" reluctantly takes leave of his lovably butt-kicking heroines – at least until the sequel.
