The role of Flower Girl in Traditional Weddings

Unlike many other roles and rituals which are still surrounded by debate, the roots of the role as flower girl made clear. In a time of the ancient Greeks and Romans flower girls were invited to present at the nuptials to symbolize the passage of the child in a prosperous and "bloom" woman, wife and mother.

Sprinkled flower petals on the altar roads first began to spread selected herbs and spices to mean fertility during the event. She is the classic symbol of innocence, which was carried on, even in medieval times by offering the shafts of wheat in the bridal procession.

Centuries rolled on and in the Elizabethan age, a series of flower girls were still involved in the bridal train and was followed by a bunch of merry musicians. A special flower girl would also have a silver cup meant for the bride and was decorated with pink ribbon along with a second bear on gold adorned rosemary branches. Besides this, all the way from the bride's home all the way to church was always covered with rose petals and many small bouquets were brought to the event to be presented as take home gifts for guests.

For many generations in this golden age only female attendants were allowed in the bridal chamber to prepare the bride for the wedding. It is a tedious process that previously would last for days. This particular practice royalties and in some European countries it is still common to see more than one flower girl and some may include children under a certain age to participate in procession.
