The artist Sir Joshua Reynolds painted dogs into his portraits, especially when he was painting children, which he did often. The most commonly seen dog was King Charles Spaniels. In one of his famous paintings, a portrait of 'Maria Gideon and her brother' in Viscount Cowdray session, the dog was a pretty big long-nosed version of King Charles. The King Charles Spaniel has one paw raised as if it is clearly ready for a game with the boy as he looks as though he obviously adores in spite of the fact that the boy is in the process with a stick. The boy is probably about to throw a stick and the King Charles Spaniel are eagerly awaiting this to happen.

In Sir Joshua Reynolds's painting of the family of George, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, which is a part of the collection of the Duke of Marlborough, using Reynolds Cavaliers.

Although Sir Joshua Reynolds portrays Cavaliers much in his paintings, he may have had a favorite dog that looked like a Shih Tzu. This dog appears in the portraits of 'Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester' in the collection of Windsor Castle, "Emelia Vansittart ', Mrs. Crewe, and a portrait of Mrs. Abington as Miss Prue in Love for Love. Most portrait painters made it a habit to get their painting studio equipped with the present figures, costumes, curtains and other accessories. The person who actually painted only made for short periods. The actual physical details, which contained these other accessories was painted on the painter's pleasure without the model need to be present. This little dog that seems to resemble a Shih Tzu was in a good part of his portraits. One can assume in this dog may have been his "pet" who remained in the studio with him, as did all the other accessories. The Shih Tzu just adores an audience and attention. He probably just loved to be the painter's pets and painting accessories while getting a lot of attention from society beauties and children of his time.

Other dogs painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds was the pug, a toy poodle or maybe a bichon. The dog was small, white, longhaired, and participated in many of his paintings.

Another interesting toy dogs found in many paintings that tell a story about the important part of the toy dogs play in people's social life. From allegory, down to comparatively recent paintings of either genre type of family portrait, dog toys, dog and often come up in his part of the family.

The families served by Sir Joshua Reynolds had their spaniels and terriers. Diana had her greyhounds. The French had their poodles. We learn from these paintings that toy dog and other dogs were regular companions of men, women and families and sit in very acceptable positions as members of the household.

There are many things written about dogs and toy dogs, but nothing can substitute for a "visual narrative", a beautiful painting, to tell us just how important the toy dog is with us as a companion all down through time. And …. in 16th century paintings are proof that the toy spaniels really existed.

It is not a sudden fad or a surprise for PET and PET care companies today is one of the most flourishing businesses in our time. Toy dogs and cats in general have always had important positions in our lives and in our hearts.

A good example a painting that tells us the story of how small dog was quite funny and irresistibly loveable little clowns, the little dog in "Portrait of a man and woman 'by Jacob Jordaens in the National Gallery, London. It was built by the artist, but does not really speak to sitters in the painting, although the toy dog could have belonged couple. Toy dog sitting at the man's feet, then out of the painting with the most delightful and comical expressions. It could have been a Maltese or a Bichon Frize. This story The painting tells us, for sure, that there was a small toy dog (of a sort) that at least a portrait painter found "irresistible." These properties all toy dogs and a part of what makes them so popular for us today. You will not find this kind of charm in a German Shepherd or a Beagle Dog!
