Color communicates. It can provide direction and clarity. When language is not color can offer valuable associations with people, places and things. Shamrock green. Fire engine red. Schoolbus yellow. The impact is profound. Ferrari is one example of many leading global brands that have used the associative and emotional impact of color to create an advantage. Think UPS brown or Tiffany & Co. blue.

So whose color is to communicate on behalf of your brand, what is it saying? The truth is different things to different people. While we all see the same colors, we interpret and remember them through the lens of our different experiences. What some consider as a nice yellow ocher others may see as, well, vomit. And in spite of Enzo's argument, lots of people can not like red on a car – even a Ferrari. Ultimately, color is subjective. So, what do you do when you consider the color options that will represent your company? Go by keeping these tips in mind:

1) Select a color, you can even: Let it be red, green or periwinkle, consider a color unique to your industry. Color associations increase brand recognition and build brand equity. A distinctive blue box confirms that this is no ordinary bauble inside, but a Tiffany bauble. The difference in perception is essential before the box is even opened, and the gift revealed.

2) understand the cultural significance: Color connotations vary widely between different cultures. Be aware of variations and both positive and negative associations. For example, in U.S. white symbolizes purity, as in a wedding dress. But in many eastern cultures, white connotes death and grief – a potentially valuable bit of information if you are about to expand into Asian markets, or targeting an Asian demographic.

3) There is king: Whether print, pixels or paint on paper, screen or fabric, your palette should be consistent. Your logo should appear in the same color on your business card, which it makes your sign or embroidery on a uniform. Corporate colors are sacred. Coca Cola red is never Coca Cola red-orange.

4) understand the consequences of technology and production processes: Electronic file formats affect the color in different ways. A CMYK. EPS file created to print does not deal with color at the same manner as an RGB. Jpg file intended for display graphics. Variations will also occur between process printing and spot color printing. Coated versus uncoated paper, and even gloss versus matte finish can completely change the complexion of color. Differences can be significant – and detrimental – if you are not taken.

5) Consider cost: Mixture of a unique color from scratch can certainly produce one-of-a-kind performance. However, the cost of reproducing colors for all applications can be expensive, and custom blends often difficult to handle, and more likely to result in errors. Characteristic color and the color themes you can get it by using commonly available resources. Pantone Matching System (or PMS) is the industry standard for printing, and provides a wide spectrum of colors. Resources such as Pantone offer cheaper options that are easy to reproduce consistently.

6) Once you own it, really own it: Protection of a particular color is as important as protecting your logo, slogan or other visual elements in your brand identity. A mark your Color (s) will protect you from copycats seeking to infringe your brand equity. A Color Trademark protects colors used to perform mark function uniquely identifying the commercial origin of products or services. UPS brown, for example, baptized Pullman Brown, was a registered trademark by the company to prevent competitors from using it to their branding.

7) Go with a pro: When developing a corporate color palette, and implementation of these colors across your brand, working with a professional graphic designer. A competent designer will be skilled in color theory, and be able to help you with the complexity and nuances of visual communication – and navigate your way through production barriers to ensure accuracy and consistency.
